May is Older American’s Month!

Celebrating Older Americans Month with Gold Country Senior Services: Flip the Script on Aging

Every May, Gold Country Senior Services joins the national observance of Older Americans Month (OAM)—a time to honor the contributions of older adults, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm our commitment to the health, independence, and dignity of Nevada County’s seniors.

Established in 1963, OAM is led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL). This year’s theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” encourages all of us to challenge outdated beliefs, combat ageism, and embrace a more accurate, positive narrative about aging.

Ageism affects how we see older adults—and how they see themselves. But here at the Sierra Gold Community Senior Center and through our community programs, we see every day how older adults are thriving, volunteering, learning, and leading. It’s time we change the story.

How can our community join in?

  • Follow Gold Country Senior Services on social media and use #FlipTheScriptOnAging and #OlderAmericansMonth to share your stories.
  • Attend one of our May events like our Mother’s Day Brunch, Lunch & Learn, or Community Lunches.
  • Volunteer or donate to help us continue essential programs like Meals on Wheels, the Firewood Program, and Senior Center activities.
  • Promote respectful and inclusive language about aging in your workplace and daily life.

Let’s work together to flip the script—because aging is powerful, purposeful, and worth celebrating.
